Frequently asked questions

What is Colostrum?

Colostrum is a 100% natural product. It’s the first milk produced by all mammals, including humans, after giving birth. Colostrum is, by nature, produced to nourish and strengthen the new-born mammal and support the new-born’s immune system from birth. Colostrum provides important substances that protect the gut and help to activate the immune system of the new-born.

Bovine colostrum
Today we know that bovine colostrum is essentially bioidentical to human colostrum.

A cow produces more colostrum than the new-born calf needs. Therefore, it is possible to utilise the surplus colostrum for dietary supplements for human use.
Bovine colostrum has a high nutritional value and is rich in natural, bioactive substances, including immunoglobulins, growth factors, peptides, and protein essential for the calf’s growth and immune system development. Up to 24 hours after calving, bovine colostrum contains immune substances in such high levels that it is interesting to utilize the surplus amounts for dietary supplements. We always ensure that the calf gets the necessary colostrum before using the surplus amount in our production.

How does colostrum work?

The hypothesis is that colostrum holds immunomodulatory qualities capable of maintaining or strengthening the immune system in humans. Beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal mucous membrane include neutralization of harmful bacteria, inhibition of gut inflammation, and stimulation of the intestinal lining repair(1) . Research is focusing on the use of colostrum to strengthen the gut lining and thus the immune system. There is no clear evidence yet of the beneficial clinical effects of bovine colostrum.(1) Nutrition Reviews Vol. 72(4):237-254

Biodane Pharma has a close collaboration with the dairy farmers supplying the colostrum for the manufacturing of ColoDan. All suppliers follow current recommendations that the calf receives 4 litres of colostrum immediately after birth in order to get the nutrients and bioactive substances essential for the best start in life. Biodane Pharma only receives any surplus colostrum available after the calf has received the necessary amount.

What is the difference between ColoDan and other colostrum products?

ColoDan differs in several areas. It is a unique and 100% Danish product – all milk used to manufacture ColoDan comes from carefully sourced cows in Denmark. The milk undergoes thorough testing to ensure that each batch of ColoDan has the same high quality and is free of antibiotic residues. If we find antibiotic residues in the raw milk from the dairy farmer, we discard the milk, thus guaranteeing the consumers the best and purest colostrum powder.

The composition of ColoDan matches the natural composition of colostrum – nothing added, nothing removed, except for water. Most other colostrum producers typically remove fat and add carbohydrates and other additives.

ColoDan also differs from other colostrum products in that Biodane Pharma supplies the product to leading researchers studying the health benefits of colostrum (read more here). We supply ColoDan to universities and hospitals studying the effect on the stomach/intestines and on the immune system.

How does ColoDan Colostrum taste?

There are no flavors added to ColoDan® Whole Colostrum. The powder therefore tastes of concentrated colostrum, which has a slightly sweet milk powder flavor. If you do not enjoy the taste, you may consider mixing the powder into cocoa milk, yogurt etc.
ColoDan® Colostrum with added cappuccino or vanilla powder flavors provides a pleasant flavor to the drink.

Are there additives in ColoDan Colostrum?

ColoDan Whole Colostrum consists of 100% colostrum and as such contains no additives.
ColoDan Whole Colostrum’s composition is the same as that of pure colostrum as nothing is added, nothing is removed, except from moisture. Most colostrum products on the market are defatted and with added carbohydrate and substances.
ColoDan Colostrum with Mocha and Vanilla flavors are made of the same quality of colostrum powder. Additives in a form of flavors have been added to provide the customer with a difference taste experience.

What is the recommended dosage of ColoDan?

If you take ColoDan, as a daily nutritional supplement, we recommend a dose of 10 g (approx. 2 tablespoons) once a day.
If you want an extra boost, try taking 20 g (approx. 4 tablespoons) e.g. 2 tbsp. in the morning and 2 tbsp. in the evening for a period of 14 days.

Are there any side effects of ColoDan colostrum?

ColoDan is made of colostrum – the first milk from cows. If you suffer from milk allergy or lactose-intolerance, you should avoid taking colostrum. Aside from this, there are no known side effects of taking ColoDan.

May I take ColoDan colostrum while I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No studies of the effect of colostrum during pregnancy or breastfeeding have been carried out yet; however, nothing suggests that ColoDan may be harmful under such circumstances. On the contrary, any effect gained by taking colostrum will most likely continue while you are pregnant or breastfeeding your baby.

Colostrum has a high protein content
Colostrum contains animal milk proteins in the form of caseins and whey proteins of high biological value. This means that they contain important amino acids in an easily absorbable form for the body. Colostrum is also rich in immunoglobulins, which play an important role in building the immune system. Finally, colostrum contains more than 100 other bioactive substances (immunoglobulins, growth factors, antimicrobial compounds), of which many are proteins.
